Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport Plug-In Hybrid Concept

Volkswagen says the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid concept “blurs the lines between road and motorsport vehicles.” Power for the concept comes from the World Rally Championship-winning Volkswagen Polo R WRC car’s 1.6-liter TSI I-4 engine and a pair of electric motors. The engine is rated at 295 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the front motor is rated at 113 hp and 243 lb-ft and the rear motor is rated 113 hp and 199 lb-ft. Total system torque output is rated 494 lb-ft. Volkswagen claims the concept can reach 62 mph in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 174 mph.

The concept’s styling hints at the future design direction of the Golf, while the body is “largely” made from carbon fiber. There is also a pair of gullwing doors. Much of the body features exposed carbon fiber including the door sills, door mirror caps, door window frames, and more. The wheel wells are fitted with a set of staggered 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the concept features carbon fiber and microfiber trim, racing bucket seats with five-point harnesses, and three vehicle information displays.
