SUBARU IMPREZA 5-DOOR

Concept previews Subaru’s future design direction.

The Subaru Impreza 5-Door concept shown at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show hints at the design direction in which the automaker plans to take all of its future models, including the next-generation Impreza. A prototype for the next-gen Impreza, expected for the 2017 model year, was spied earlier this month.

Subaru says the concept’s “compact body features a blend of bold expressions of Subaru’s Dynamic & Solid design elements and a quality feel beyond its class.”

Up front, the concept has a wide and low stance thanks to its three-dimensional hexagonal grille and LED hawk-eye headlights similar to those on the WRX and Legacy concepts of only a few years ago. Some of the styling elements seen on those concepts were lost along the way to production, and we expect the front end styling to be toned down from this concept when the production Impreza arrives.

The Impreza 5-Door concept sports two prominent character lines along the side. The first is just below the green house and features a deep scallop below it, while the other located just above the side skirts swoops up toward the rear wheels. The extended fender flares are said to “express the reliability of Subaru All-Wheel Drive.” The taillights mimic the shape of the headlights, while the prominent rear fender flares are more noticeable from behind.

Subaru says the high-luminance silver color has the luster of metal and raises the concept’s sense of quality. Riding on a 105.1-inch wheelbase, the Subaru Impreza 5-Door concept is 173.2 inches long overall. While the concept rides on a set of 235/40 R19 tires, the prototype we spotted featured a set of 17-inch wheels.
