2016 INFINITI Q50

Infiniti’s best-selling model in the U.S. will receive some major changes for 2016. The 2016 Infiniti Q50 boasts new turbocharged engines, a new range-topping Red Sport 400 line, and updated convenience features.

A new 2.0-liter turbo engine will help the Q50 compete with a host of other small luxury sedans offering entry-level four-cylinders. The Q50’s direct-injection turbo-four has 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and a stop-start system that should help improve efficiency complements the new engine.

Infiniti will also offer three V-6 variants. A new 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V-6 delivers 300 hp, and the 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid model carries over from the previous year. Meanwhile, Infiniti has introduced a range-topping model called the Red Sport 400 that packs a more powerful version of the turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6 offering 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy improvements? Up to 6.7 percent, says Infiniti. All powertrains are matched to a seven-speed automatic with the choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

  

The new Q50 also benefits from an updated Direct Adaptive Steering system intended to increase road feedback. A new Dynamic Digital Suspension is said to improve ride comfort and agility via firmer damping control. Drivers can also choose their own settings to customize engine, suspension, and steering characteristics.

Don’t expect the updated Q50 to stray too far from the old version in terms of design. The Q50 continues on with its narrow headlights, long hood, and mesh-pattern grille. The top-of-the-line Red Sport 400 receives unique 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels as well as special exhaust tips, however. Inside the cabin, look for two touchscreens that feature hand-gesture operation. The dashboard has the same rounded curves disturbed only by a vertically oriented center stack.

For 2016, the Q50 gains a Premium Plus package that includes a number of convenience and technology goodies. Heated front seats, navigation, SiriusXM Traffic, memory exterior mirrors, and a heated, electrically adjustable steering wheel are just some of the goodies offered with this option. Available safety technologies on the Q50 include adaptive front lighting, intelligent cruise control with full-speed range, forward emergency braking, blind-spot warning, back collision intervention with cross traffic alert, and more.

The 2016 Infiniti Q50 heads to dealerships next year. The model will compete with the Lexus IS, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Acura TLX.
